The Right Diet

Weight-Loss: State of Mind Leads to Success

There are many different methods available to achieve weight-loss. You only have to look along the shelves of any bookshop and you will find a variety of ways to lose weight effectively. The aim of this website is to bring you all the options in order for you to find the method that will suit you best.

However, in order for any of these methods to be successful, and more importantly in order to keep the weight off long-term, then you need to ensure that your state-of-mind is right and that your attitude will carry you through.

Let us look then at the areas we need to spend time considering before we embark on any weight-loss program.

Why Do You Want To Lose Weight?

This may seem like a very obvious question, but it is important that you have the answer straight in your own mind, so that you can refer back to it any time you may be wavering during your diet.

The ‘why’ of why you want to lose weight is going to be very personal to you and may well incorporate several different reasons.

Health: Is it because lately you just haven’t felt as healthy and full of vitality as you once used to? Do you have aches and pains, stiff knees etc? Or is it because of more serious health issues, for example you are on the path to diabetes or you are concerned about your cholesterol levels?

Looks: Do you want to fit into your smaller sized clothes again? Is there a special event such as a wedding or a holiday coming up or do you want to just look in the mirror and feel really great again.

Pressure: Are you feeling cajoled into losing weight by others? This can be because of genuine concern about your health and done out of love. However, I feel we need to be clear here that it is impossible to feel clear in our weight-loss direction, until we are doing it for ourselves. Your mind must have the complete buy-in that losing weight is clearly what you want to do for yourself and for no-one else.

What Is Your Goal?

You must clearly define your goal at the beginning. Until your mind has a clear goal, then it has nothing to aim for.

This goal may be a certain amount of pounds lost, or it may be a particular size dress or pants that you want to fit into, or it may simply be that you want to be able to do a cartwheel again. OK let’s not get too ambitious, but the meaning is clear, you must set a goal.

Focus On The Positive

Throughout the weight-loss process you must focus on the positive. Do not beat yourself up about being ‘overweight’ or ‘fat’, instead focus on the positive effects of becoming slimmer, whether those effects be in terms of health, looks or vitality.

This is because if you are constantly feeling down about how you look now, you are more likely to fall off the wagon food-wise because of unhappiness or be drawn back to all those little snacks that give you comfort.

Losing weight does not have to be an uncomfortable experience and the more you focus on how your life will change for the better, the more positive the weight-loss experience will be.

Give Yourself Rewards

Throughout your diet it is important to give yourself non-food related rewards. Every time you move a step closer to your goal you should buy yourself a little something, or even a big something, to tell you and your mind how well you are doing.

This could be a new pair of shoes, a CD, an LCD screen or even tickets to the game. Whatever makes you happy, and of course, whatever your budget will allow.

This takes you a step closer to no longer relating pleasure only to food. Eating should always remain a joy but by attaining a more positive and balanced attitude, your mind comes to understand that food is only one pleasure amongst many.

These four steps to discovering what you want to achieve and helping you along the path to achieving it, can make a huge difference to your weight-loss plan.

We tend to think that losing weight is dependent entirely upon what we do or do not put into our mouths. What would make the process of losing weight easier and more effective for all of us, would be discovering that the biggest part of any diet is what goes on in our heads. Getting this part right, at the start, will ensure that your weight loss goals are met that much more quickly and easily.
